Dr. Faheem Younus is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland. In the post 9/11 America, where Islam is a source of intrigue to some and conflict to others, Dr. Younus is leading the charge by opening a frank dialogue between Muslims and Americans. Awards: Dr. Younus is the recipient of the prestigious Presidential Service Award (Gold) by Barack Obama in 2009 for his work with Muslim Youth in America. He received an honorable mention at the 2011 Annual Volunteers Service Award by the Governor Martin O’Malley. In 2006, he was recognized by then Governor Robert Ehrlich for his services in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. He has also received numerous awards and citations for his civic engagement and excellence in patient care.
Service: Dr. Younus served as the National Youth President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA (MKA USA) from 2006-10. This leading Muslim youth group has thousands of members organized in over 60 chapters across USA. As President, he helped to build a strong Muslim American identity by demonstrating that there should be no conflict between our pledge to the Holy Quran and our pledge to the flag of United States. Under his leadership, Muslim American youth adopted over 50 highways across the nation, collected thousands of units of blood, organized massive community outreach events and held large-scale conventions. He currently serves as the National Secretary for Education for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA.
Teaching: Dr. Younus teaches a popular course, Islam: Fact and Fiction, at multiple campuses across the nation. He has delivered over 50 lectures about Islam to students at the Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, University of Baltimore, and various community colleges in Maryland. He also teaches medical students from the University of Maryland and the medical residents at the Franklin Square Hospital. Dr. Younus has addressed audiences as small as 10 to as large as 10,000.
Writing: Dr. Younus is a Huffington Post blogger and an award winning writer of the Muslim Writers Guild of America. He has published and syndicated over 50 opinion-editorials in various newspapers such as The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, AOL News, and The Baltimore Sun. His short pieces have been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News, and The Boston Globe. These publications are archived under the “Published Op-Eds” tab on this site. In addition, he has over a dozen scientific publications in peer reviewed journals.
Media: “Where are the moderate Muslims?” Responding to this call, Dr. Younus has represented Islam on major cable TV channels such as FOX News and ABC News. You can also listen to more than 50 of his radio interviews on this site.
Leadership: A strong believer in the philosophy of “servant leadership,” Dr. Younus serves on the Board of Directors of various non-profit organizations including Upper Chesapeake Health, University of Baltimore, Humanity First, Islamic University in Canada, and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA.
Profession: Dr. Younus is a respected physician, currently in the full-time practice of Infectious Diseases at a Maryland Hospital. During his career, he has helped thousands of patients, taught hundreds of residents and students, and implemented dozens of process improvements at the hospitals in which he serves.
